The essential value of the SuNeungDokHae brand lies in its dedication to finding joy in learning. Inspired by this philosophy, designer Jaehun Kim visualized the learning process through the motif of a window. Each book in the series represents a window, with the world seen through it depicting the essential stories contained within. By relating the material in each chapter to the background images viewed through the window, SuNeungDokHae creates an engaging and immersive learning experience.
What sets SuNeungDokHae apart is its unique approach to content presentation. The brand utilizes a series of illustrations that directly reflect the target learning content. These illustrations, combined with a deliberate color system, separate the fields of study between elementary and middle school students. Additionally, SuNeungDokHae employs an infographic design that visually and cognitively elucidates the learning content, making it easier for students to understand and retain information.
Visang, the design team behind SuNeungDokHae, carefully considered the physical characteristics of its teenage readers. The brand is sized with dimensions of 220mm * 280mm * 7mm for easy transportation, and the corners are rounded for safety. To create a positive aesthetic, spot coloring printing and an iridescent finish are used, based on the overall brand color system.
SuNeungDokHae is designed for self-directed study, aiming to reduce the weight of advanced level learning and promote the perseverance needed for independent study. Through gorgeous illustrations and an infographic design that stirs an emotional connection to literary works, the series empowers students to enjoy self-directed study without fear.
The SuNeungDokHae project was conducted in Seoul, South Korea, from June to December 2020. The brand was developed based on research prioritizing vocabulary and reading comprehension as foundational study skills. By utilizing infographics to explain challenging content, SuNeungDokHae supports students in efficiently learning high-level reading content for the CSAT.
The SuNeungDokHae project faced several challenges, the greatest of which was designing exceptional academic material that empowers learners to enjoy self-directed study without feeling burdened. To overcome this challenge, various design methods were employed. The infographics help students grasp the learning goals at a glance, present familiar characters, and apply warm and gentle colors to the content, creating a pressure-free learning environment.
Visang's SuNeungDokHae has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. The brand was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021 in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
